Volunteer work is the donation of one's time and energy to help others in need without remuneration. Volunteer work can be found in almost any discipline and is more common among high school and college students. Though it does not reward one financially, volunteer work does offer training and experience that will prepare a person for a career. Volunteer work benefits both the volunteer and the community or people receiving aid.

Volunteer opportunities allow people to get involved with causes they are passionate about, regardless of previous experience. Volunteer work also benefits people in their time of need.

Volunteer work is unpaid, which makes it difficult for some people to commit to. Volunteers should donate their time to a cause they are passionate about to have a successful experience.

Many people volunteer in their communities or locally. Volunteers can also choose to travel to other parts of the country or to poorer parts of the world to volunteer.
Effects

Volunteer work helps produce cohesive communities and productive members of society. Economies may improve since government spending is not necessary to pay volunteers.

Volunteer work offers practical experience, on-the-job training and professional development. Volunteers generally find their experiences to be rewarding.
