Overview
Valentine's Day is the one day of the year when it is OK to eat all the heart-shaped candy you want, wear pink and red together, and send goofy paper valentines to all your friends. Whether you're a grownup or a kid, madly in love or just love your friends and family, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the holiday of love. These craft projects are suitable for kids or for the young at heart.

Make Valentine's Day special with homemade crafts.

Valentine Locker Box
When Valentine's Day rolls around and your kid is eagerly anticipating all of the little paper valentines she will be receiving from her friends and classmates, you can prepare by helping her make a place to put them all. Many teachers make a project out of decorating a box or bag to hold valentines. A tutorial in Disney's "Family Fun" magazine shows how to make a locker out of a cracker box. An empty saltine cracker box is an ideal size, but you could also use a cereal box or anything of the same basic size. Use a glue stick or double-sided tape to adhere silver or gray paper to the outside of the box. You could also use silver spray paint for this, but you would most likely have to help your kid with that. Then cut out a door for the locker by using a craft knife to cut three sides of the door so it can swing open and shut. You can cut ventilation slots at the top and bottom if you want, making it easy for kids to slide their valentines in. Decorate the locker by making a pennant shape out of construction paper and writing your kid's name on it. You can also make little paper "magnets" to place on the locker that represent things your kid is interested in. Glue a button on the locker door to serve as the combination lock. If you want, glue another button on the outside of the locker and loop a string around the two buttons to keep the locker closed.

Teacher's Pet
Help your kid earn some brownie points by making a sweet Valentine's Day craft for his teacher. Make tissue paper flowers by folding a stack of pink, red and white squares of tissue paper accordion style and looping and twisting the end of a pipe cleaner around the middle of the resulting strip. Fold the strip in half so that it makes a fan shape. Then carefully separate each layer of tissue so that you end up with a fluffy multilayered flower that resembles a carnation. The pipe cleaner stem can then be spiraled around a pencil. Create a bouquet of pencils by making several and gathering them together in a decorated tin can or vase.

Heart Candy Holder
Martha Stewart provides some great Valentine's Day craft ideas for grownups also. Use these cute crafts to decorate your house around the famous holiday. You can make little paper heart-shaped cups hung with pretty ribbons to hold yummy Valentine's Day candy. Using the template from marthastewart.com, cut out the shape of the cup from decorative paper or cardstock. Secure the edges and tie a ribbon to the cup to hang it from a doorknob or car rearview mirror for a special surprise for a loved one. Fill it up with candy and a sweet message.
