  • Homemade Card

A homemade card is a classic Valentine's Day gift. You can assemble a paper valentine out of construction paper (red, pink and white are good colors), paper doilies, glitter, buttons, sequins and magazine clippings. Use glue or tape for quick, convenient assembly, or sew clippings or items to the card with embroidery thread for a more sophisticated look. Ribbon can be used both as decoration and to bind a multi-layered card together. Use a hole puncher to make holes large enough to thread the ribbon through. A homemade card is so special by itself that you need only a simple note inside of it.
Get as crafty as you dare with a homemade card.

  • Living Valentine

This year, give a valentine that will last long after the holiday is over. Easy to assemble at home, a potted plant makes a fantastic valentine for young or old, male or female, friend or love. First, paint a clay pot with a Valentine's Day design, such as a heart or bunch of red and pink flowers. If you are worried about your artistic ability, simply make an abstract design on the pot or use a stencil. Next, place soil and a plant into the pot. Finally, write out a small valentine card and tie it with ribbon or twine loosely around the pot or the base of the plant.
A fancy pot can go unpainted and makes a more mature living valentine.

  • Valentine Treat

Valentine's Day is known for it's candy and sugary sweets, but assemble something a little different this year---a basket of red and white healthy treats for your loved one, complete with a hidden love note. Inside a pink, red or white basket from a thrift store, pile up fancy cheese, fresh valentine-colored fruits such as cherries, plums or blood oranges, a bag of dried cranberries mixed with raw cashews, and several red or pink flower blooms. Tucked into the food and flowers, place a small valentine with a special note inside it. You can also scatter several notes throughout the basket, each with a different sweet phrase.

  • Satchel of Love

Create a goody bag that displays your love or affection this Valentine's Day by sewing a heart-shaped pouch out of felt, and packing it with candies, gifts and a valentine card. To sew the bag, get two pieces of felt that are red, pink or white, hold them together, and cut a heart shape out of them. Sew the edges of the heart leaving a hole in the top, and into the hole, slip the valentine goodies. For a more sophisticated valentine, get individually wrapped, high-quality chocolates, all of the same kind, and slip them into the satchel along with a valentine card and jewelry in a box. For a more fun, casual style, get all sorts of inexpensive candies and small gifts for the bag, and fill it brimming full. For a healthier alternative, include some whole fruits in the bag in place of the candy, or get lower-sugar candy like carob or nut-based treats instead.
