ProLiant servers are a kind of computer network server made by a company called HP, and are used by many organizations and businesses today. ProLiant servers are available in an array of hardware and software configurations for many purposes. These servers feature a high compatibility with many different operating systems--factors that allow ProLiant servers to have a variety of uses.

Network Storage
One of the primary uses for a ProLiant server is for the purpose of managing shared data on a computer network. This can be done with a server operating system such as Linux. This enables multiple computer users to access and upload data to be shared on the server and its connected storage media. This kind of shared network storage can also allow a team of computer users on the network to work on shared files together. Such a network storage server can also more easily manage the backup of important data for the business or organization. A network server can mirror all shared data to a secondary disk array or another kind of storage media, such as a tape backup. This allows a network administrator to more easily care for important company information.

Application Server
HP ProLiant servers are also used on computer networks as application servers. An application server provides applications to be shared across a computer network by multiple computer users. The computer users on a network can access and run applications on an application server as though the applications are installed locally on the computer at which they are working. This enables easier installation and application administration for a network administrator. Another added benefit is more affordable network application licensing for some businesses and organizations. Group application configurations within a computer network are also possible. One such use of a ProLiant application server would be running a network edition of Microsoft Office and having each department of a company sharing a common custom "New Document" template for a Microsoft Word document. Another department could have its own custom template. All of the computer users in an organization could be using one installation of Microsoft Office on a ProLiant application server providing shared custom configurations to their desktop computers. This can be done with a ProLiant server running an operating system such as Windows.

Communications Server
Another primary use of a ProLiant server is for the purposes of network communication and project management. Running a ProLiant server as a business or organization's email server is one such example. There are many kinds of digital network communication providable by servers today that reach beyond just email. ProLiant servers with appropriate network messaging software installed can also be used to provide messaging services to a business or organization's local network. ProLiant servers can also be used by businesses and organizations for the purpose of communicating on team projects. This includes calendaring services and other shared communication, such as project forums. Blackberry Server can also be installed on some ProLiant servers, depending on software configuration. This allows for the management of Blackberry communications.
