How to Use a Power Scooter

Overview
The days of keeping one foot on the skateboard and using the other to kick your way around town are long gone (except for skateboarding types). Today, the power scooter is dominating the market for tweens. Of course, just because it's marketed to younger kids doesn't mean parents don't want to learn how to ride them. How else are kids going to learn how to ride a power scooter?

Step 1
Wear your helmet. It's the safe thing to do and your kids expect you to set an example.
-
Step 2
Toggle the choke on the scooter's motor. This should be located near the ripcord. Most power scooters run on gas and start like lawn mowers or weed trimmers.
-
Step 3
Pull the ripcord to start the motor.
-
Step 4
Put one foot on the deck of the scooter. The deck is the flat expanse of metal and plastic between the two wheels.
-
Step 5
Test the brakes to make sure they are grabbing the wheels. Do this before you start moving to save yourself the embarrassment of jumping off a moving scooter with no brakes.
-
Step 6
With one foot on the ground and one on the deck, throttle the gas by twisting the right handlebar down, toward the front wheel. This gives the motor the gas, propelling the scooter forward.
-
Step 7
Put both feet on the deck, one in front of the other and off you go. Steer clear of busy pedestrians areas, major roads or crowded parks until you are comfortable with how the scooter handles.
