What to Use in Making a Foam Pit

by Andy Pasquesi
  • Overview

"Foam pit" refers to a large, padded structure about the size of a swimming pool filled with hundreds of pieces of soft, low-density foam. Popular in gymnastics training, a foam pit allows gymnasts to learn high-speed jumps, vaults and flips without danger. Foam pits have also found use in the sport of motocross, where 50-foot-high jumps and spills are common.
  • Y33 Packing Foam

Of the seven types of packing foam available, "Y33" has the consistency, durability and softness best suited from a foam pit. With a density of 1 lb. per cubic foot, Y33 is light enough to give way--allowing for gentler impact--yet heavy enough to keep its form and not fly out of the pit. Granted, many companies offer shredded foam, "variety cubes" and even scrap polyester for a lower price. However, shredded foam is too messy, variety cubes may contain dangerously firm pieces and polyester flattens/compacts over time.

  • How To Get It

Y33 is sold by several companies (see Resources ), usually in standard 6-inch by 6-inch by 6-inch cubes or 8 by 8 by 8 cubes in the color of your choice. At first glance, the price-per-cube might seem expensive. However, if you contact the companies and explain your plan to fill a foam pit, it's very likely that they will offer you a volume discount. While Y33 foam can be found in certain types of furniture cushions, the time and effort you'll spend scavenging for enough clean, large pieces will probably a cost more than ordering directly from a supplier.
