How to Use a Flat Iron for Smooth Sleek Hair
by Jessica Russell
-
Overview
Wavy or curly hair can be beautifully styled, but sometimes women want straight, smooth hair. Some women have straight hair, but it is not as smooth as they would prefer. As early as 1872, flat irons have been used to help women achieve the sleek hair they desire. Throughout the ages, flat irons have evolved and become more efficient and effective thanks to the introduction of ceramic heating plates. You no longer need to spend hours straightening your hair nor do you need to go to a hair stylist; you can achieve a sleek, professional look on your own.

Step 1
Apply anti-frizz spray or leave-in conditioner to clean, wet hair to create a smooth finish. Dry your hair completely with a hair dryer or let it air dry.
-
Step 2
Plug in and turn on the flat iron. Set it on a clean, dry, level surface.
-
Step 3
Clip your hair into small sections no bigger than the thickness of your index finger.
-
Step 4
Clamp the flat iron around a section of hair close to the roots. Slowly pull it down to the tip of the hair section. Release the hair from the flat iron.
-
Step 5
Comb the straightened section of hair to ensure that it is flat and smooth. Use the flat iron on the section of hair a second time if necessary.
-
Step 6
Repeat steps four and five until all of your hair has been straightened. Style as desired.

- Apply a light amount of hair spray to each section and allow it to dry before straightening it to prolong the time that your hair remains straight.
Try straightening your hair while the flat iron is cool to practice the straightening method.
Thinner flat irons work better for short hair while wider flat irons are better for long hair.

- Never leave a hot iron unattended or allow children near a hot iron.
Do not heat the flat iron to a setting hotter than necessary to straighten your particular type of hair. If you use a setting that is too hot, it could damage your hair.
Hair with too many hair products in it will cause your hair to be bulky, heavy and prone to damage during the straightening process.
