Types of Psychics

by Rachel Vega
  • Overview

Psychics are people who claim to have perception abilities beyond the basic five senses -- that is, beyond what they can see, hear, touch, taste or smell. As such, these abilities are called "extrasensory perception" (ESP). Psychics engage in and can identify phenomena that cannot be explained through ordinary or scientific means. The types of psychics are determined by the kinds of powers they claim.
  • Sensory Powers

Clairvoyance is remote viewing -- receiving visions of distant events, people and places. Clairaudience involves hearing things or voices very far away that would be impossible for a regular person to hear. Clairsentience is the ability to know hidden information about people. Intuition involves natural perception or knowledge of events, actions, feelings or activities about other people, outside the normal range of intrinsic knowledge. Precognition is the ability to see detailed information about something that will happen, rather than the event itself.

  • Perception Powers

Many psychics say they have the ability to read the aura; such people are known as "sensitives." Sensitives can distinguish interference in the air immediately surrounding people, animals and objects. Auras have been described in both spiritual and scientific terms, and they involve the electromagnetic radiation surrounding a mass or body. Psychometric psychics can realize energies (also known as vibrations or impressions) and glean information from objects. Dowsing involves using rods to locate objects such as water.
  • Bodily Powers

Astral projection (out-of-body experience) is the ability to bring your conscious self-awareness to a position outside your physical body. Levitation is the ability to lift your body above the ground. Automatic writing is the act of receiving information from spirits through the subconscious and putting it down on paper. When the information is received but spoken in the psychic's own voice, it's known as channeling.
  • Mind Powers

Telepathy is the ability to communicate or convey information with others through thought. Animal telepathy is the ability to commune with animals and have a strong connection to their thoughts and feelings. Telekinesis (also known as psychokinesis) is the ability to affect or move objects with the mind. Pyrokinesis is a special form of psychokinesis; it allows a psychic to spark fire using the mind.
  • Considerations

Many people consider psychics' claims to be fraudulent and have attempted to debunk psychics and their abilities. This has led many psychics to practice their craft on the fringes of society. However, psychics continue to be called on by investigators searching for missing items or people.
