Overview
Dog mange is a condition that occurs when tiny mites burrow under your dog's skin. Symptoms include scratching, hair loss and inflammation.
-
Demodectic Mange
The Demodex canis mite causes demodectic mange, or red mange. These mites live in small amounts on all dogs, and they are not contagious. A reaction to the mites can cause hair loss and irritation in small areas, often around the eyes or mouth. However, it can spread to the entire body, especially if a dog is genetically predisposed to the disease.
-
Sarcoptic Mange
The Sarcoptes scabiei mite causes sarcoptic mange, also known as scabies, which is highly contagious. These mites cause itching, hair loss and infection.
-
Cheyletiellosis
The Cheyletiella yasguri mite causes cheyletiellosis, or "Walking Dandruff." You can easily see these mites without magnification, and they are highly contagious. Cheyletiellosis causes itching and scaling of the skin.
-
Ear Mites
Ear mites, or Otodectes mites, are also considered mange. They infect the visible part inside a dog's ear. Symptoms are redness, inflammation, itching and clumps of brown discharge in the ears.

Diagnosis
A veterinarian will diagnose the type of mange by microscopic examination of skin samples. Evaluation of a dog's symptoms and general appearance also aid in the diagnosis. Treatments include lotions, dips, antibiotics and prescription medications.
