Whether you are already a dog owner or just thinking about becoming one, you have probably thought about getting a fence. Not only are fences useful for containing dogs, but they also provide safety. There are many types of fences from which to choose depending on your wants, needs and budget.
  • Types

There are many types of fencing used for containing dogs. Common types include wooden slat, plastic, wrought iron, chain link, snow fence and electronic fencing. Scale should be determined by the size and physical ability of the owner's dog, as well as the intended use of the area to be fenced.

  • Function

Dog fences primarily serve to restrict a dog's area. They keep dogs safe by limiting their access to dangerous roads, predators and other harmful objects. In turn, fences keep people and more vulnerable animals safe from aggressive dogs. Dog fences allow dogs more freedom than leash-walking when exercising and eliminating waste. They can give access to an entire yard for roaming or restrict a dog to a certain area.
  • Features

Wooden and plastic slat fences give privacy for both the dog and the owner. Wrought iron, chain link, snow fence and electronic fencing allow the dog and passersby a more unobstructed view. Unlike the others, electronic fencing does not create a physical barrier. Electric wire is placed underground along a perimeter. The dog wears a receiver to which a radio signal is received. The signal alerts the dog when it comes near the perimeter and transmits an electric shock when it comes too close.
  • Considerations

Type and activity level of dog, aesthetic appeal and budget are considerations when choosing a dog fence. For larger breeds and dogs that jump, fence height and stability are important factors. Snow fences are an option for people who are concerned with price. However, they are not as aesthetically pleasing as an electronic or wrought iron fence.
  • Modifications

Finding and adapting fencing for dogs that actively try to escape confinement can be a chore. When building a fence for a dog that digs, consider burying it a few inches underground. Concrete or rocks can be used to fill holes dug along an existing fence. Chicken wire can also be placed underground to prevent digging. For dogs that jump, angled steel arms can be attached to the top of most fences. These arms can then be strung with wire or fence fabric.
