Overview
Cell phone batteries have come a long way since the first days of cell phones. The life and technology of batteries have increased the lifespan and charge time available for cell phone users. Batteries are more advanced and give users the ability to quickly charge their phones for the day. Each type of battery gives different advantages and use for cell phone users.
-
Lithium Polymer
Lithium polymer batteries are highly advanced units with a greater lifespan and better charging capabilities. They require DC chargers, and it does not lose charge memory like its predecessors. This battery is also the lightest and most expensive of all the battery types. Because of their cost, lithium polymer batteries are not as popular as other cell phone batteries.
-
Lithium Ion
Lithium ion batteries are the most popular brand for more advanced cell phones. They are expensive, light-weight, but they have the advantage of charging very quickly. They are best used by people who travel or use the phone often and need a way to charge and talk throughout the day. These batteries lose their ability to hold a charge if left on a charger for a long period of time.
-
Nickel Cadmium
Nickel cadmium batteries are the most common on the market. These batteries are heavier than the more expensive counterparts, but they perform well. Nickel cadmium batteries brought the idea that a cell needs to be completely discharged before being recharged. These batteries lose the ability to hold a charge if not discharged first. Nickel cadmium is not environmentally friendly, and they contribute to the rising accumulation of toxic waste.
-
Nickel Metal Hydride
Nickel metal hydride batteries are similar to nickel cadmium, but because these batteries do not have the cadmium, they are more environmentally friendly. They are slightly more expensive, and they also carry the problems of discharging and recharging without damaging the battery.

Battery Manufacturers
There are several manufacturers of cell phone batteries. Most batteries fit a specific phone due to the shape and contact locations of the batteries. iPhone and Blackberries need specific batteries. Most cell phone companies provide batteries for its users that are specialized for the phone. Additionally, more expensive, longer lasting batteries are available at a slightly higher cost.
