How to Treat Sleep Disorders

by Sueanne Dolentz
1There are various types of sleep disorders and they include anything from snoring and sleep apnea to insomnia and narcolepsy. Depending on which sleep disorder you suffer from, treatment will vary. However, there are steps you can take on your own to lessen the effects of a sleep disorder, even reverse it altogether.
Take a sleep inventory. Begin taking notes of your sleeping experiences, including how many times a night you wake up, how quickly you fall asleep, and how long you typically sleep in a single night. A sleep inventory will help you to better narrow down just what you're suffering from and what may help to treat it. It will also be helpful information to share with your doctor.Practice good sleep hygiene. Many of the sleep disorders people experience can be remedied simply by getting a better night's sleep. Get up in the morning at the same time every day, even on weekends and holidays. Get a full eight hours of sleep, no more and no less. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and nicotine right before bed. Sleep in a bedroom that is dark, cool and quiet and never force the issue. Sleep when you're tired, never when you're not.Unwind before bed. Do something that relaxes you before heading to bed, whether it be reading, taking a hot bath or simply meditating. You'll likely sleep better and have a fuller night's sleep if both your mind and body have a chance to cool down.Check out natural herbal treatments. Many herbs and herbal teas will aid you in getting to sleep and staying there. Check out the herbal supplements at your health food store to see what might work for you. Some supplements may include Valerian, Kava Kava and Chamomile. Remember to check with your doctor before trying any of these supplements.
Talk to your doctor. If your symptoms persist even after getting into a healthy sleep routine, it's time to talk to your doctor for a better solution.
