How to Treat Migraines With No Medicine

    Migraine headaches are often extremely painful and can be debilitating. While there are prescription medications available, they don't always work for everyone, and some may have unwanted side effects. They may also be expensive, so finding ways to treat migraines with no medicine is important to those suffering. Different remedies work for different people, and a remedy that may have worked in the past could suddenly stop working. It's important to be open to a variety of treatments to help treat migraines.
  • Remedies for Migraines That Do not Involve Medication

 
  • Step 1

    Avoid triggers, if at possible. Certain foods, or scents, can trigger a migraine headache. Those who suffer migraines should actively avoid anything that they know will trigger an episode. Wine and chocolate are common triggers.
  • Step 2

    Apply hot or cold packs to the back of the neck, over the eyes and over the forehead. It can be soothing to alternate hot and cold packs while resting in a prone position. Keep packs in the freezer at all times so they are ready for use.
  • Step 3

    Rest in a darkened room. Light often aggravates migraine headaches, so it's helpful to keep the room as dark as possible. While resting, practice relaxation techniques. Pain can often cause muscles throughout the body to tighten, which causes more pain. Practicing deep breathing and simple relaxation techniques can provide some relief.
  • Step 4

    Sleep, if possible. Sleep is restorative and can be an excellent pain reliever. The relaxation techniques mentioned in Step 3 can help a person fall asleep.
  • Step 5

    Smell peppermint or lavender essential oils. These scents are found to relieve pain in some individuals. Use one or the other to determine whether they are helpful. Sprinkle some of the essential oil on a wet cloth and drape it over your face to breathe in the essential oils.
  • Step 6

    Find a massage therapist. Massage can loosen muscles and help release tension which sometimes causes a migraine headache. Regular massage is beneficial to releasing toxins from the body and relieving pain.
  • Step 7

    Exercise regularly. A 30-minute walk every day can mitigate the pain of a migraine and prevent another from occurring.
  • Step 8

    Consider acupuncture or acupressure therapy. This therapy can bring relief, although it is not well understood.
