  • Overview

The iPod Nano is one of several portable music players available from Apple. Transferring music from a computer to an iPod Nano can be done by installing iTunes software on a Windows or Macintosh computer. iTunes is a free software program from Apple that allows you to organize and play music stored on your computer, purchase additional music, and sync music on your computer with an iPod or other devices from Apple.

  • Step 1

Open a web browser and navigate to the Apple iTunes download website. Read the Windows or Macintosh system requirements listed on the website to ensure iTunes can run on your system. Click "Download Now" to begin the download. After the download is complete, install iTunes by following the on screen instructions.
  • Step 2

Launch iTunes and import music on your computer to your iTunes Library. Music can be added to your iTunes Library automatically the first time you launch iTunes by allowing it to search for music files stored on your computer. To import music manually, click "Add Folder to Library" in the File drop down menu. Navigate to the folder where your music is stored and click "OK."
  • Step 3

Plug your iPod Nano into your computer by connecting the supplied USB cable to the iPod and your computer. If this is the first time you are connecting the iPod to your computer, a setup process will help you get started and to give the iPod a name. Following the setup process, the iPod will appear in the left iTunes window under Devices. Click on the iPod in this window and a list of tabs will appear in the main iTunes window on the right.
  • Step 4

Click on the "Music" tab in the main iTunes window. Click the check box next to the words "Sync Music." To transfer all the music you imported into your iTunes Library, select the option for "Entire music library." If you do not want to transfer all the music in your iTunes Library to the iPod, select the option for "Selected playlists, artists, and genres." In the window that appears, choose the music to be transferred. Click "Apply" at the bottom on the iTunes window, and your music will be transferred to your iPod Nano.
