    Sometimes it's hard to resist your dog's sad eyes looking up at you while you are eating something yummy. However, there are some human foods that are extremely toxic to your beloved dog that you should always resist the urge to feed him. Below are some toxic foods that could lead to serious illness or even death if your dog ingests any of them.

  • Types

    • Chocolate • Grapes and raisins • Onions and garlic • Caffeine • Macadamia nuts • Alcohol • Bones from fish, poultry or other meats • Mushrooms (some varieties of) • Avocados • Hops • Xylitol (sweetener found in gum, candy, other foods) • Nutmeg • Apple, apricot, cherry, peach and plum stems, seeds and leaves • Baking powder and baking soda
 
  • Effects

    Ingestion of any of the above toxic foods for dogs can cause symptoms ranging from vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, seizures or excessive panting to kidney, liver or heart failure, coma and even death.

    If your dog ingests any of the above poisonous foods you should contact your veterinarian immediately or call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 to find out what you should do next.

    Call the emergency number immediately -- do not wait to see what happens to your dog after ingesting any of the toxic foods.

    Keep all poisonous foods for dogs locked inside cabinets or pantries and out of reach of your dog.
