  • Network marketing, also called multi level marketing or MLM, is a business process that involves selling a product directly to a customer rather than through a retail store. Network marketing commonly involves recruiting levels of salespeople underneath a primary sales representative, creating multiple levels of income for the representatives. Rather than use traditional advertising methods such as placing ads in magazines or on television, the majority of network marketing advertising and sales are done via word-of-mouth and establishing relationships with customers. Network marketers prefer this method for several reasons, primarily because direct sales provide higher commissions due to the removal of the middleman, and also because selling the product directly to the consumer provides an opportunity to recruit the customers as potential future salespeople, adding to future income from sales.

Avon is one of the most well-known and respected network marketing companies in the United States, and has created a product line formed around easy sales and ordering, no requirement to maintain inventory and the possibility for sales reps to earn money on the first day.

    Primerica Financial Services is a marketing company that sells financial investment services, life insurance, pre-paid legal services, debt management and credit monitoring through representatives. These sales reps are paid commission based off of the number and price of sales completed and also recruit other sales representative underneath them for future sales and residual income.

    The Pampered Chef is an international company that primarily focuses on kitchen utensils, food products, and cook books. The Pampered Chef has one of the largest sales forces in the world with more than 62,000 sales representatives that make the majority of their sales by holding kitchen parties, to which they invite prospective clients and make presentations of Pampered Chef products. The Pampered Chef also focuses on recruiting sales representatives to maximize sales and create residual income.
