Tips to Save Money on Weddings

by Lisa Milbrand
  • Overview

Weddings are expensive---the average cost is nearing the $30,000 mark. But by making a few smart maneuvers with your wedding plans, you can easily cut the cost.
  • Cut the Guest List

For every person you invite, you'll need to pay for a meal, invitation and favor---and for every eight or so, you'll need an additional centerpiece.

  • Choose an Off Time or Date

The most expensive time to have a reception is Saturday night, especially during the summer. Choose a month outside of "wedding season" (February or March in most of the country) or opt for a weeknight (or even a Friday or Sunday). By picking an off time, you will be in a stronger negotiating position with halls and providers. You'll do even better with a morning or afternoon reception---and the menus for early-day parties tend to be cheaper (omelets instead of filet mignon).
  • Look for Ways to Spend Smarter

Create centerpieces or escort cards that can double as favors (for instance, stack pretty favor boxes in the center of the table as decoration). Share ceremony flowers with another bride marrying at the same church or synagogue. Hire a DJ in lieu of a band. Offer guests wine and beer instead of having an open bar.
