Tips on Going to See the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular

by Elliot Quimby
  • Overview

The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular is a Fourth of July celebration of freedom. The orchestra plays for 2 1/2 hours at the Hatch Shell. During the last half-hour, fireworks explode over the Charles River. According to the official Spectacular Web site, the event attracts more than 500,000 visitors. With a little preparation, you can enjoy the performance with minimal hassle.
  • What to Bring

Bring an umbrella or windbreaker, because Boston weather is notoriously unpredictable. You may want a camera. Bringing food and water is a good idea, although there will be vendors selling snacks. Bring something to sit on, such as a blanket or light folding chair. You'll want something to entertain yourself and those with you.

  • When to Arrive

Come at least an hour before the concert. The earlier you arrive, the easier it will be to find a good seat. Some people bring a picnic dinner and wait for hours. Keep in mind that the city will be especially crowded on the Fourth of July; plan extra time to get there.
  • Transportation

The subway, or T, is the easiest way to get to the Fireworks Spectacular. You won't have to fight traffic or find a place to park. However, the subway will be crowded. Make sure you have money on your Charlie Card or Ticket for the return ride before you leave.
  • Where to Watch

Don't sit in at the Oval in front of the Hatch Shell. Those who do must go through a security checkpoint, and the trees around the area obstruct the view of the fireworks. If you just want to see the orchestra, go to the Oval for the July 3 concert. Both performances are free. Sit on the Esplanade along the Cambridge side of the Charles River to avoid the bulk of the crowd. Sound towers along the river will play music piped in from the concert.
  • When to Leave

Plan to leave before or after the crowd departs. If you start to leave at the grand finale, you will have a better chance of getting a seat on the subway. You should still be able to see most of the fireworks while you walk. If you would rather sit through the end of the performance, wait about 30 minutes or an hour after the show before leaving. The streets, parking lots and subway will be a little less crowded.
