How to Throw Soft Tip Darts

by Darin McGilvra
  • Overview

Soft tip darts offer a safe alternative to the steel-tipped darts in traditional play. They are usually played on an electric scoreboard, which makes it easier for casual players to keep score. In fact, the electronic dartboards often record a score even if the dart bounces off the board.

  • Step 1

Stand relaxed at the throwing line with your weight evenly distributed on both feet. Do not lean over the line to shorten the distance. This will cause you to lose balance and throw off your shot.
  • Step 2

Hold the dart level and aim at the target. Look at the target, not the dart, when preparing to throw.
  • Step 3

Do not throw the dart like you'd throw a fastball in baseball. Gently release it with your fingertips, almost like a knuckleball. Throwing a dart accurately takes fine motor control, not sheer muscle power.
  • Step 4

Follow through after releasing the dart. Your hand should be fully extended at the target after release.

  • Check your darts for wear and tear, especially the soft tips, before you use them and between games. Make sure the screw-in tips don't need to be tightened. Don't try to spin the darts when you throw them. This will only result in an awkward release. As in all sports, practice makes perfect.

  • Do not throw the darts too hard. The soft tips will break and the darts can bounce off the board.
