How to Thank a Ring Bearer

by Andrea Buckner Schoenherr
  • Overview

Put yourself in your ring bearer's shoes. Just as you may be nervous about walking down the aisle, so might he. On the other hand, your special little guy might have so much energy that you are concerned about him lasting through the long ceremony. Whatever his personality, make sure you know your ring bearer well and customize the ways you involve and thank him. Your wedding is an event he'll never forget---make him feel confident and important!

  • Step 1

Ask him in a special way. Consider having the groom ask him to be your ring bearer as little guys love attention from a cool adult male. Explain that it means a lot to both of you for him to be part of the wedding and explain exactly what he'll be doing as a ring bearer. There are several ring bearer books available (see the Resources section of this article) that explain the duties of being a ring bearer in an exciting way. Consider purchasing him one and, more importantly, sitting down and reading it with him.
  • Step 2

Regularly talk about the wedding and his important role during the time before the wedding. Talk with his parents about his feelings regarding the wedding. If he is nervous, practice walking down the aisle with him.
  • Step 3

Give him a goody bag of gifts at the rehearsal. Common items like coloring books, puzzles, games, and toy cars will all help keep him occupied for the next couple of days. Talk to him or his parents to find out the types of toys or activities that entertain him most. Also, consider purchasing a lasting sentimental item to help him remember the special day. A personalized mug, piggy bank, or photo frame will be treasured for years. If appropriate, give him a gift similar to the one given to the groomsmen.
  • Step 4

Give him a photo album of pictures after the wedding day. Make sure the photographer knows to capture some priceless pictures of the special little man!
  • Step 5

Write him a special thank-you card. You could also make him a certificate of appreciation for a job well done.

  • Be sensitive to the needs of other young children who may be around during the rehearsal or other times the ring bearer is receiving a lot of attention. Consider giving small gifts to make the other children feel included too.
