How to Test Golf Equipment

Overview
Advancement in the golf equipment technology has been significant during the past two decades. Traditionally, golf balls was divided into two categories: a ball made for distance and durability that was used by most high-handicap players, or a ball made for the low-handicapper that offered a high spin rate and better performance around the greens. There is now one type of ball that provides the benefits of both. Woods are now made from metal and are oversized, making the much easier to hit. Irons are now offered in oversized models and also "cavity-backed," rendering them much easier to use. Hybrid clubs, a cross between a wood and an iron, are also available.

Step 1
Go to a golf shop and purchase several different brands of golf balls. Titleist is far and away the most popular brand worldwide. Other good choices are balls from Callaway and Nike. Seek the assistance of the golf shop staff and explain that you are attempting to find the right golf ball to suit your game. The staff will explain the features and benefits of the various types of golf balls offered by each manufacturer. Play several rounds of golf with your new golf balls to find which one is best for you.

Step 2
Go to a golf shop that has a practice range. Most of these shops are located at golf courses. Tell the golf pro that you would like to test some of his demonstration clubs. Each golf club manufacturer sends a quantity of their latest equipment to golf professional around the world with the specific intent that local golfers be allowed to try them. Tell the pro about your golf game, and he likely will have recommendations about what clubs might work best for you. Take the clubs to the practice range and try each one. A benefit of trying "demo" clubs is that if you find a club you like, the pro might offer you a discounted price on it because it is slightly used. The fact that the club has been used does not alter its playability. If you like one of the clubs, this is an excellent way to get a quality golf club at a discounted price.

Hit the range to find the clubs you're most comfortable with.

Step 3
Go to a golf club manufacturer's demonstration day, also called a "demo day," at a local golf course or practice range. The manufacturer's representative will have the latest golf equipment with him, specifically for people to try out. Test whatever equipment appeals to you. Generally, there will be only one company represented, but this is a great way to try specific equipment. Find out when a manufacturer will have a demo day in your area by going to the company website. Some of the more popular club makers are Ping, Callaway and TaylorMade.
