Symptoms of Feline Thyroid Disease

Overview
The thyroid glands in cats are located on either side of the windpipe. The hormones secreted by the thyroid gland control the cat's overall metabolic rate. Too little hormones causes hypothyroidism and slow metabolic rate leading to lethargy and weight gain. The more common problem is hyperthyroidism, or an over abundance of hormones.
-
Diet
Cats with hyperthyroidism typically are always hungry. Despite eating constantly, they don't gain weight.
-
Thirst
Hyperthyroidism in cats causes increased thirst and increased urination.
-
Digestive System
Cats with an overactive thyroid gland may suffer from vomiting and diarrhea.
-
Behavior
Cats with hyperthyroidism will exhibit signs of nervousness, hyperactivity and irritability.
-
Appearance
The fur of a cat suffering from a hyperactive thyroid may be dull and unkempt. The cat's toenails may become thickened.

Examination
A veterinarian can do further tests for hyperthyroidism. He may palpate the animal's throat to see if the thyroid glands are enlarged. Blood tests can provide further confirmation of thyroid levels.
