1Owning your own business and having a career that you love is something that many people have thought of doing at least once. When your passion is photography, it is natural to consider starting your own studio and while it is not a given that you will make large amounts of money, it can be very satisfying.
- Take as many pictures as you can, even if they are just photos of family and friends. Taking pictures before the opening of your studio will let you create a portfolio of images that you can share with potential clients. Having even a small client base before you open will put you ahead of the game when you actually open a studio. This will also allow you to have referrals and testimonials in place stating that you do good work, along with examples of the work you are capable of producing.Choose your location. If you live in a larger town with a large amount of photographers, you may place your studio in a smaller nearby town that does not have a photographer. Another choice in where to locate your studio is whether you would prefer to rent or buy a building or whether you have the space to place your studio in your home.Research where you would like to have your images printed or whether you will have them printed at all. It is not out of the norm for a photographer to give digital copies to the customer. If you do decide to have your images printed, it is important to find a place that does a good job as different printers can make a good image look unprofessional.Call your local business license office. This office will be able to tell you what city and county licenses and forms you need to have and can give you information on what you need or who you need to call for any federal licenses or forms you may need. You may also want to contact a lawyer or an accountant for any other information you may need.Advertise for your business. You can advertise in the newspaper but there are other ways to advertise as well. Give your business card to everyone you meet and start a website. A website will let people view your work so that they can make an informed decision on if they would like to hire you or not.
