How to Stack Cups

by Jim Katula
  • Overview

The World Sport Stacking Association is the governing body of a new and exciting competition that is held throughout the country. Competitions are held according to strict guidelines in order to maintain a level of fairness and consistency. Competitors are timed based on speed to stack and unstack a group of cups in a predetermined way. The easiest of these is the 3-3-3. The best competitors can do this is under two seconds. The most difficult is the cycle, which can be done in under eight seconds.
  • Basic 3 Stack

  • Step 1

Stack the cups in a pile of three. In your right hand, remove the top cup from the stack. Place the cup next to the remaining pile of two.
  • Step 2

Remove the top cup from the pile with your left and place it on top of the two cups now sitting side-by-side on the table.
  • Step 3

Unstack the cups by sliding the top cup over using your right hand. Use your left hand to place the single cup on top of the pile of two.
  • 6 Stack

    • Step 1

Begin with a stack of six cups. Using your right hand, remove the top three cups from the stack.
    • Step 2

Remove two cups from the pile on the table using your left hand. Place the bottom cup from each hand on the table next to the cup still resting on the table, forming a row of three.
    • Step 3

Place the cup from your left hand on top of the three, and do the same with one cup from your right hand. You should now only have one cup in your right hand and a pyramid of cups with a row of three and a row of two.
    • Step 4

Place the remaining cup on top of the pile, completing the pyramid.
  • 10 Stack

    • Step 1

Begin with a stack of 10 cups.
    • Step 2

Remove five cups with your right hand. In your left hand, remove four cups, leaving one cup on the table. Alternate cups with your hands to form a base of four cups.
    • Step 3

Proceed to the next row and place three cups, then two, ending with one from your right hand on the top of the pyramid.
  • Cycle

    • Step 1

Begin with stacks of three cups, six cups and three cups on the table. Perform a three stack, six stack and three stack as described above. Unstack the cups, leaving two stacks of six cups.
    • Step 2

Perform two six stacks. Unstack the cups, leaving one stack of 12 cups.
    • Step 3

Create a 10 stack. Place the remaining two cups on the table next to the stack, one upside-down and one right-side-up.
    • Step 4

Tap the two cups on the side and unstack the 10 stack, leaving three piles of cups on the table: a three stack, a six stack and a three stack.
