What Are the Signs & Symptoms of Shingles?

by Andrea Coventry
  • Overview

Shingles is a painful viral rash, caused by the varicella zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chicken pox. People who have had chicken pox will have the virus lay dormant in their bodies for several years, before it reactivates as shingles. Watch for the following signs and symptoms of shingles, then consult a medical professional if you have them.
  • Initial Symptom

The first symptom of a shingles outbreak is pain. Sometimes the pain is mild; for others it can be excruciating and make them highly sensitive to touch.

  • Rash

A few days to several weeks after the initial pain begins, the shingles rash usually appears. It is a bunch of fluid-filled blisters that pop open, then crust over. Occasionally the rash does not appear, but the skin may be itchy.
  • Location of the Rash

The shingles rash is most commonly found on one side of the body, from the middle of your back to the breastbone in your chest. It can also be found on your scalp, neck or face.
  • Other Physical Symptoms

A shingles outbreak may also cause fever, chills and headache. For some, it may cause an upset stomach or diarrhea. These symptoms can be easily mistaken for flu.
  • Warnings For Immediate Medical Attention

Seek immediate medical attention if a shingles rash appears around the eyes, as this can cause permanent or temporary blindness. Shingles on the face can also lead to hearing loss or facial paralysis.
