Senior citizens are often the target of abuse and theft in parking lots. Robbers can quickly steal purses, items and even vehicles in a parking lot. Many safety precautions can be taken by senior citizens to ensure their safety in parking lots.
  • Car Door Locks

Have your key ready to unlock your door before leaving a public building. This will get you inside your car more quickly. Lock the doors immediately upon entering and exiting your vehicle.

  • Purses

If possible, leave your purse in a locked car. Only carry a small wallet that can be hidden in a pocket. Never leave your purse in a grocery cart child seat. Visible purses can attract thieves in parking lots.
  • Parking

Always park as close as possible to your destination's entrance. If parking at night, park in a well-lit area.
  • Pay Attention

When walking through a parking lot, pay attention to who is around you. Walk with confidence. Look inside your car, including the back seat, before entering.
  • Company

If possible, bring someone with you when visiting a bank or other financial building, including ATM visits.
