How to Select a Childbirth Class

by Tuan Dinh
  • Overview

Childbirth classes offer opportunities for you to meet with lactation consultants, pediatricians and other childbirth experts. Childbirth classes provide a supportive environment to prepare you for the process of labor and delivery and help you to become more confident. That's why it's important to choose the right one.

  • Step 1

Select a class about labor and delivery. This class will teach you about different stages of labor, what to do during labor and when to go to the hospital. Make sure that the class also includes a labor tour, which will get you familiar with the hospital. Ask about where to park, where the entrance to the hospital is and which floor or room to go to.
  • Step 2

Research about classes that you are going to attend and determine whether it fits with your philosophy regarding medical interventions. For instance, a Lamaze childbirth class emphasizes natural childbirth but also gives a lot of information about medication and other medical interventions. On the other hand, a Bradley Method class is based on the principle that most women can give birth without any medical intervention, and emphasizes preparation for childbirth through diet, exercise and practice of breathing techniques.
  • Step 3

Select a childbirth class that offers you a chance to meet with pediatricians, residents and birth attendances. In this class you can ask a pediatrician about pediatric care immediately after birth and your baby's immunization schedule.
  • Step 4

Choose a childbirth class that teaches you different breathing and relaxation techniques to relieve pain during labor.
  • Step 5

If you decide to breastfeed, take a breastfeeding class. You'll learn how to help your baby have a proper latch. You will also learn about how to deal with and how to prevent cracked nipples and breast engorgement.
