RV Generator Requirements

Generators can make life on the road much more enjoyable, allowing many of the comforts of home while in your RV. If you are thinking of purchasing a generator, you should know what requirements and criteria to look for so that you select one that gives you the performance you want.
Type and Brand

Most RVs require specific generators, so don't assume that you can purchase any type of generator and use it with your RV. Look first for models from respected manufacturers. Poweredgenerators.com recommends Honda, Guardian and Onan as the top three brands in RV generators.

Power

Compile a list of all the electric devices you will use in your RV. Find the power requirements (expressed in watts) for each of these items by checking their labels or looking at the specifications in the owner's manual. Add up the power requirements from the list. This number will give you an idea of what the minimum power rating should be for your RV generator.
Size

Measure the area where you want to put your generator. You will need a generator that not only meets your power needs, but also will fit in the spot you have picked out for it.
Noise

RV generator noise can be bothersome, and more RV parks are instituting rules on the level of noise allowed. Research these rules for major park chains around the country and look for a generator with a noise rating that is within these parameters. Most RV generators have a noise rating provided by the manufacturer.
Fuel

Check a generator's fuel economy because you will need your fuel costs to fit within your RV trip budgets. Manufacturers provide a fuel consumption rating that will help you compare models.
