What Are the Risks of Breast Augmentation?

Overview
As with any surgery, there are risks to undergoing breast augmentation surgery. Before making the decision to have this type of elective plastic surgery, be sure to understand and accept the risks and problems that could occur.
-
Infection
Infections can occur at either the incision site, or within the breast itself. Antibiotics and, in serious cases, removal of the implant may be required.
-
Too Big or Too Small?
Because there is no way to know exactly what your breasts will look like after augmentation, there is a chance of being dissatisfied with the final result.
-
Stretch Marks
When an implant is too large for the surrounding tissue to handle, stretch marks may appear on the breast.
-
Misplacement or Slippage
There is always the chance that the plastic surgeon places the implant incorrectly, so that the breasts do not look symmetrical. Slippage out of the pocket in which the implant is placed can also occur, resulting in the breast area appearing deflated.
-
Leaking or Rupture
Due to either a severe blow to the chest or an implant malfunction, the implant may begin to leak or even burst; surgery with a new implant is the only way to remedy this situation.
-
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia always holds the risk of paralysis, coma or even death. Be sure you understand the risks before deciding on an elective surgery.
