How to Return to Work Part Time

by Contributing Writer
  • Overview

No matter your reasons, returning to work after a long hiatus can be challenging. Adjusting to a regular work schedule after a long interim period is difficult, and explaining your former and current situation to possible employers may be uncomfortable. With a few key points in mind, though, you can rejoin the workforce part-time and get back into the rhythm.

  • Step 1

Before beginning your job search, take some time to understand your situation. You need to be familiar and comfortable with your working situation so that you can explain it when an employer asks. Know what times you are available to work and what types of accommodations you might need for a job.
  • Step 2

Update your resume and make sure that it is as current and relevant as possible. As you locate potential jobs, you may want to tailor your resume to those jobs, as this will increase your odds of getting a callback.
  • Step 3

When you secure a job interview, be prepared to discuss your employment gap with your employer. Most employers are understanding, and as human beings, they will take cues from the way you describe your time off. Be confident about your reasons for taking time off and be prepared to discuss them.
  • Step 4

If you have continuing circumstances that will require flexibility from your employer, be upfront about them. If your potential employer doesn't ask about them, you will need to bring them up during your interview. It is more difficult to explain what you need from the employer after the interview process than before, and with adequate prior knowledge, your employer can be better prepared to help you.
  • Step 5

As you begin work with your new employer, keep communication lines open. The key to an effective employment relationship is understanding both your needs and the needs of your employer. Don't be afraid to talk to your boss about your situation. Both parties have the most to gain out of a healthy working relationship.
