How to Repair a Cat Box

by LissaJ
  • Overview

Your cat box is the place where your cat does his business. A clean and functioning cat box is crucial because otherwise a cat might start to use other places in your home to relieve himself. It is essential for you to be able to fix common cat box problems so you can continue to have a happy and healthy cat.
  • Traditional Cat Box

  • Step 1

Dump the dirty litter out of your traditional cat box so you can inspect the box and see if it is broken in any particular place.
  • Step 2

You may find nicks in the side or top, cracks in the side or bottom, or broken or missing pieces, such as a door in the lidded cat box or a filter in the regular cat box.
  • Step 3

Replace any filters that are missing. Replace filters that you are not certain are working.
  • Step 4

Discard the door if you feel that your cat doesn't need it. The door to a lidded cat box is not essential and might prevent some cats from using the box.
  • Step 5

Wipe off with a wet rag any cracks or dents in the sides of a plastic cat box. Let them air dry.
  • Step 6

Cover any cracks or dents in this type of cat box with a layer of duct tape. Be sure to tape both sides of the crack.
  • Electric Cat Box

    • Step 1

Check the electric plug for the cat box to make sure that it is in good working order. Most problems with electric cat boxes are from a faulty plug.
    • Step 2

Use the "test" feature, if the cat box has one, to determine whether the cat box is functioning properly.
    • Step 3

Replace any batteries that your electric cat box contains.
    • Step 4

Change the filter on your electric cat box, as listed in the directions.
    • Step 5

Check the mechanism of your electric cat box to see if it is clogged or if anything else has gotten in the way of the cat box working properly. Remove any objects and repair any damages you see to the mechanism.
