How to Repair a Burned Tablecloth

by Duane Craig
  • Overview

Suppose you discover your tablecloth has a burn in it. You can repair with a fabric repair kit. You will be able to fix the tablecloth without the unsightly and noticeable stitching of a patch. The same kit can be used to repair damage to other fabrics and pieces of furniture. According to the manufacturers, these repair kits also can repair leather, upholstery, vinyl and cloth. The repairs can be done anytime, and in some cases may actually help prevent damage from becoming worse.

  • Step 1

Compare fabric repair kits by looking for user reviews and recommendations. Check reviews for similar repairs. Talk to family and friends who have used fabric repair kits to get their recommendations.
  • Step 2

Obtain a fabric repair kit from vendors on the Internet, or try to find one at a fabric and upholstery store. They may be available at major retailers. All fabric repair kits are similar, but may include different items to accommodate different steps.
  • Step 3

Prepare the surface. Clean the damaged area with household cleaner and trim away loose threads.
  • Step 4

Match your color by using the color mix chart to determine which color of fabric powders (included in the kit) most closely matches the damaged fabric. Place the color choice into the mixing bottle and shake for 30 to 45 seconds to blend the fibers evenly.
  • Step 5

Cut the backing fabric in the kit to be slightly larger than the damaged area if the damage is a hole. Position the backing fabric underneath the damaged area.
  • Step 6

Apply the clear adhesive in the kit onto the damaged spot using the spatula, also included. Fill the damaged spot so it is level with the surrounding fabric.
  • Step 7

Place a small amount of the mixed fibers on to the screen applicator in the kit and shake the screen over the adhesive to distribute the fibers evenly. Completely cover the adhesive with the fabric fibers.
  • Step 8

Pack down the fibers with the spatula onto the adhesive. Use the spatula to create patterns in the repair that are similar to the patterns in the fabric. Allow the repair to dry for several hours before blowing off any excess fibers.

  • Consider mixing kit colors to achieve the closest match possible. Sewing the damaged area before repairing it can create a stronger repair. Stitching around large damaged areas will yield better results.
