How to Remove Rust From Steel Nails

by Contributing Writer
  • Overview

If you have old steel nails that have not been stored in an airtight container, the odds are good that you now have old, rusty steel nails. Fortunately, this does not necessarily mean that you must pitch them. If the nails are still sound, just covered with a light coating of rust, you can clean them and use them. Just make sure to remove all the rust so that you do not end up staining whatever item you drive the nails into.

  • Step 1

Fill the container 2/3 full of vinegar. Don't dilute the vinegar with water. Make sure enough vinegar is in the container to completely cover the nails.
  • Step 2

Soak the nails in vinegar for 24 hours. Every few hours, shake them gently so that the vinegar reaches all parts of the steel nails.
  • Step 3

Rinse the nails off. Use a toothbrush to scrub the nails as you rinse to dislodge any remaining rust.
  • Step 4

Tackle tough rust spots with a potato half dipped in baking soda. Rubbing the baking soda on the nail using the potato half will lift any remaining rust.
  • Step 5

Rinse the nails again. This will remove potato and baking soda residue. As before, use the toothbrush to remove any remaining rust flakes.
  • Step 6

Dry off the nails. Use a cleaning rag to dry the nails completely so that they do not immediately start rusting again. The nails are now ready for use, but do not use them outside since they are not rust resistant and will ultimately get rusty again if they are exposed to the elements.
