How to Remove Paint From an Aquarium

Overview
Removing paint from an aquarium is a relatively straightforward process, but it does take some time and effort. Generally, aquariums are painted on the back side to provide a backdrop for the fish. In theory, this is a great idea, but depending on the type of fish in your aquarium, the painted area could actually be detracting from the colors of your fish. For this reason, most hobbyists prefer to remove aquarium paint and replace it with a backdrop or nothing at all. However, if you already have fish in the aquarium, using a paint solvent is very risky since even a drop could kill your fish. Instead, you will have to rely on physical effort to do the trick.

Step 1
Clear a small area of paint with the razor blade. This will give you a place to start scraping. Once you have gotten the small area cleared, you can stop using the razor blade and start using the plastic putty knife. The putty knife is the preferred tool because there is no risk whatsoever of scratches using a plastic scraper.

Step 2
Scrape the paint with the plastic putty knife. Use gentle, firm pressure and be patient. This likely will take several hours on a small tank, and even a few days on a large tank. If any flakes of paint fly into the water, fish them out with the net immediately.

Step 3
Clear any stubborn spots with the razor blade. Anything that you cannot get off with the plastic knife will have to be removed with the metal blade. Place the blade flat against the surface of the glass rather than scraping with the corner to avoid scratches.
-
Step 4
Clean off the tank. Spray the glass cleaner onto a cleaning rag. Never spray it directly on the aquarium. Wipe down the glass to remove all remaining paint chips and finger prints. Now, you are ready to enjoy your newly refurbished fish tank.

- Watch your fingers when using the razor blade. Do not ever place a hand in front of the blade while you are scraping.
