How to Remove Hair Dye From a Coat

by Randall Shatto
  • Overview

Hair dye changes the color of your hair--and hopefully, only your hair. The process is time-consuming as well as messy. Hair dye can drip onto the floor, face, neck and clothing. When you wear a coat while dyeing someone's hair or receiving the treatment, spills can happen. When a hair dye stain dries, it is extremely difficult to get out of the fabric. It is important to remove hair dye from the coat right away while the stain is still damp.

  • Step 1

Run the cold water to soak the hand towel. Place the towel over the hair dye stain. Press down hard on the towel so the coat can gather the dampness. As coats are generally a heavy material, do not soak the entire garment.
  • Step 2

Leave the hand towel on the stain. Wait for roughly 25 minutes. Press down on the towel again.
  • Step 3

Remove the towel and pour a drop of mild laundry detergent onto the spot. If the hair dye stain is large, use more soap. Pat into the stain with your finger. Allow the detergent to penetrate the stain for three minutes.
  • Step 4

Dip the sponge under cold water and wring out. Blot the area in a circle. Start at the outer ring of the stain and move inward. Wring out and get more cold water when the sponge begins to turn color. Repeat until you cannot remove any more dye from the coat.
  • Step 5

Hang the coat up to air dry. Keep away from excessive heat or sunlight.

  • If your coat is non-washable, take to a professional dry cleaner. If the hair dye stain is still on the coat, repeat the steps. Use warm water and a stronger laundry detergent. Test a hidden area of the coat before using any detergent stronger than mild. To prevent hair dye from spilling onto clothing or coats, wrap a towel around your shoulders. Also, wear worn, old clothes when dyeing your hair.
