Reasons for Interventional Radiology

Overview
Interventional radiology involves the use of imaging equipment to see inside the body during surgical procedures. These procedures are completed by the radiologist, who is the physician who reads imaging exams and does the procedures within the department.

PICC Lines
PICC Lines are catheters that are usually inserted into a vein in the arm. They are kept in the arm for extended periods of time and are used for the frequent administration of medication. Ultrasound may be used to insert the catheter into the vein, and fluoroscopy for visualizing the insertion in relation to the heart.
-
Biopsies
Biopsies are the sampling of tissue using an aspiration needle or biopsy gun. Ultrasound is often used for biopsies, although computed tomography or fluoroscopy may also be used.
-
Steroid Injections
Steroid injections are often given by injecting the steroid into the spine. Computed tomography is useful for visualizing the location of the needle.
-
Angiography
Angiography uses contrast that is injected into the blood vessels to visualize any blockages or other problems. X-ray, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging can be used for this procedure.

Abscess Drainage
Abscesses are fluid collections within the body that are infected. Ultrasound is useful for visualizing the needle in relation to the abscess for aspiration.
