Overview
It is common for your dog to vomit. If he eats too fast, exercises too hard or munches on some grass in the backyard, he often will end up getting sick. However, if your dog's vomiting is repeated or is accompanied by other symptoms of illness, you should call your veterinarian immediately. It will probably turn out to be something simple--like a dietary indiscretion or gastritis--but there could be a more serious problem.

Gastrointestinal Disturbance
Viral and bacterial infections, intestinal blockage or trauma, or intestinal parasites will interfere with proper gastrointestinal function, resulting in vomiting.

Kidney Failure
Vomiting is a common symptom of both acute (sudden onset) and chronic (subtle onset) kidney failure in dogs. If vomiting is accompanied by changes in water consumption and urination, a painful abdomen, general weakness, disorientation and loss of appetite, take your dog to the veterinarian immediately.
-
Pancreatitis
Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) can occur suddenly and is typically caused by a sudden change in diet or regular consumption of high-fat foods. In addition to vomiting, symptoms include loss of appetite, a painful abdomen and dehydration.

Liver Failure
Liver failure occurs when at least 75 percent of liver function is compromised. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice (yellow membranes and skin), seizures, enlarged abdomen, lethargy and bleeding.
-
Diabetes Mellitus
Vomiting in addition to increased thirst and urination, weight loss, lethargy and compromised vision, can be a symptom of diabetes mellitus. Dogs typically contract Type II diabetes, in which the body is unable to properly metabolize insulin.
