Reasons to Buy a Laptop Rather Than a Desktop

by Genevieve Rice
  • If you're in the market for a new computer, you might be asking yourself whether you should buy a laptop or a desktop computer. Traditionally, desktops have had faster processing speeds, longer warranties and more built-in features for prices lower than laptops. But as today's laptops are becoming more advanced and cost-effective, they are becoming more of a practical option for the everyday consumer. Using a laptop offers several benefits to the computer user.
  • Mobility

Perhaps the biggest benefit of a laptop over a desktop is its portability. Laptops allow you to transport your computer and, by extension, all the programs and information stored on it to wherever you need it, from office to office or coffee shop to coffee shop.

  • Light-Weight

Although you can technically move a desktop, you couldn't pack it away in a slim computer bag and easily carry it to the nearest Wi-Fi hotspot at a moment's notice. Even laptops considered extremely bulky typically weigh less than 8 pounds. For the ultimate in light and compact computing, consider ultra-light laptops which typically weigh in at only 2 to 3 lbs.
  • Space

With a monitor, hard drive, printer, speakers and any other accessories, desktop computers take up a lot of room. This may not be an issue if you have a spacious office or home, but for those with cramped quarters, a laptop, which takes up very little space, is a godsend. A laptop can fit practically anywhere you fit and doesn't require designated office space to function.
  • Wireless Function

Unless specially outfitted, most desktops require a number of wires and power cords plugged into various power sources to operate. A self-contained machine, laptops with a fully charged battery can operate completely wireless. Even if the battery has little charge left in it, the only equipment you typically need is a power cord and a working plug-in to use your laptop.
  • Peripherals

Although modern laptops come equipped with a wealth of features, including multiple USB ports, CD-ROM/DVD drives and burners and plenty of memory, you can supplement your laptop's function by connecting it to printers, scanners and other computer accessories as needed.
