How to Read Pound Gas Meters
by Nathaniel Miller

Overview
Municipalities attach meters to the outlet of the water lines that run into your house so that you are only charged for the amount of the utility you use. Depending on the area, you may only pay your water bill bimonthly. This is because the water company does not always send someone to your meter to read the amount of water you used that month. Almost all companies allow and welcome a personal reading by you, the consumer. This saves them from having to send a representative to your house and saves you money in the process. Reading the pound water meter is easy and straightforward, so start saving today!

Step 1
Locate your water meter, which is often on the side of the house, near the curb or inside the house in the basement.
-
Step 2
Look at the first of the four dials on the meter that indicate your water usage, and write down the lowest number the pointer hand is closest to. If the dial is between numbers, use the lower number. Use this same technique to read the rest of the meter dials and write down the numbers.
-
Step 3
Subtract the reading of last month's usage from the total you just read on the water meter to determine your total gas used. Contact a representative from the gas company to determine if you can enter your reading online or over the phone.
