Overview
Practicing Christians often don't have a knowledge of their holiest book, the Bible, like they should. Picking up the family Bible that may have been on the shelf for years is a great way to start learning some of the lessons, parables and values that can guide your everyday life. Before you jump into Genesis and start reading, however, you need to learn how to read from the Bible so that you absorb as much as possible.
How to Read from the Bible

-
Step 1
Choose a version of the Bible that is right for you. There are many different versions of the Bible that may make it an easier read depending on your age or comprehension level. Some Bibles have footnotes that give some background of the verses you are reading; others highlight in some manner the words Jesus Christ spoke.

Step 2
Pray before turning a page. When you get ready to read from the Bible, ask God for guidance before you begin. In your prayer, you should ask God to open up your understanding so that you can absorb the true meaning of what you read.
-
Step 3
Stand while you read. Standing while you read from the Bible will help increase your focus and keep you energized while studying chapters and verses that can be difficult reads. Standing while reading God's Word can also be done as a sign of reverence to God.
-
Step 4
Read the Bible out loud. Reading the Bible out loud will help you remember what you read, much like practicing lines for a play. Hearing, reading, and looking at the words in the Bible will help you learn in visual, oral, auditory and interactive aspects.
-
Step 5
Gather together in a group. Joining with friends, siblings, children or spouses, taking turns and reading the Bible out loud, can add a new dimension to your reading. You can have a group discussion about the chapters that you read to see what different interpretations can be gleaned.
