    Rat Terrier Puppy Information
Rat terriers are an American breed of dog classified in the terrier group. There are five to seven puppies in a litter, and they can live as long as 18 years.
  • History

Rat terriers resulted when early immigrants crossed several breeds to produce a dog suitable for controlling vermin and other pests. Mechanized farming and the use of poison as pest control decreased their numbers until their comeback as pets in the late 1970s.

  • Appearance

Rat terrier puppies are born with erect ears that drop as their eyes open. Some are born with a short tail. According to the Rat Terrier Club of America, they should be 20 to 50 percent white with dark patches.
  • Temperament

Rat terrier puppies are active, playful, friendly and non-aggressive. They love to please their owners and often enjoy agility training.
  • Health

Rat terriers are relatively healthy; allergies and bite problems are the most common issues.
  • Considerations

Rat terriers need frequent brushing. Shedding increases in autumn and spring. Due to their strong instinct to hunt, a fenced yard is recommended.
