How to Put a Password on My Windows 98

Overview
Although Windows 98 was not a part of the networking boom that came with operating systems like Windows NT and 2000, it is still possible to include a user password when the computer boots. A boot password protects the computer from people accessing the Windows operating system. Implementing a Windows password only takes a few steps through the Control Panel.

Step 1
Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Settings." From the Settings window, double-click the "Control Panel" icon. This opens the Control Panel, which has several options for Windows settings.
-
Step 2
Double-click the "Passwords" icon in the Control Panel. When this dialog window opens, click the "User Profiles" tab. Select the option "Users can customize their preferences and desktop settings. Windows switches to your personal settings when you log on." and click the "Ok" button. This allows you to change the Windows password.

Step 3
Enter a username and password for the Windows computer. Once you enter this information, remember what was entered, so you can log in to the computer after the PC reboots. Reboot the PC and the new username and password is set on the computer.
