Overview
Sony's PlayStation Portable, also known as the "PSP," is a hand-held video game console that also plays digital audio, displays digital photos, plays digital videos and UMD movies, and can access the Internet through a wireless connection. If you want to use your PSP for storing and playing digital music, such as MP3s and WMAs, you must use a computer and a compatible USB cable to transfer the files into the appropriate folder in your PSP.

Step 1
Update your PSP. Check that your PSP is running the latest version of the system software update before you attempt to transfer music. Go to the PSP's support web page (see the Resources section for a link) and click the link for downloading the latest system update. This web page will display the latest version of the update available. To see if your PSP is running this version, go to the "System Settings" menu on your PSP's main menu, then select "System Information" to see which version is installed on your PSP. If you need to update your PSP to the latest version, return to the PSP support web page and select the method you want to use to update your PSP and follow the website's instructions.
-
Step 2
Convert your music to a supported format. The PSP supports multiple digital audio formats, including the three most popular formats: MP3, WMA and WAV. Use any digital audio conversion program, which you can download or purchase, to convert your digital audio files to these types or any other types supported by the latest system software update.
-
Step 3
Plug your PSP into a computer. Insert the USB cable that came with your PSP (or any USB cable with a mini-B connector) into the USB port located on the top of the PSP and into a computer's USB port. Wait for the computer to recognize your PSP as a removable drive. If it does not recognize your PSP, make sure that your PSP has activated the USB connection. To do this, go the "Settings" menu on your PSP (the suitcase icon), scroll down the menu and select "USB Connection" to activate the connection.
-
Step 4
Create a "Music" folder on your PSP. Once you can access your PSP through your computer, double-click the PSP/removable drive to open it. The PSP will have at least two folders, "PSP" and "Video." If your PSP does not have a music folder, you must create a new folder in the main directory (not within another folder) by right-clicking and selecting "Create New Folder." Name the new folder "Music," making sure to use all capital letters. Your PSP will not recognize folders that are not named in all capital letters.
-
Step 5
Copy the digital audio files to your PSP. Locate your converted digital audio files stored on your computer and copy them into the PSP's "Music" folder. You can do this by highlighting all of the audio files and pressing the "CTRL+C" buttons or dragging the files directly into the "Music" folder. Depending on how many files you are transferring to your PSP, this may take a while. When the transfer is complete, the audio files will be stored onto your PSP's memory card. You can now play the music files on your PSP by selecting the music menu (indicated by a musical note symbol), scrolling to a song, and pressing "X" to play it.
