Overview
Having sufficient levels of probiotics in your gut is important in maintaining a strong immune system and preventing or alleviating digestive problems like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
-
Symptoms
One in five Americans suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms which include gas, diarrhea or constipation, bloating, and abdominal pain especially after eating.
-
What are probiotics?
The World Health Organization defines probiotics as "live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host."
-
Significance
Probiotics, or "friendly bacteria" as they're sometimes called, are naturally found in your gut and help keep bad bacteria in check.
-
Prevention/Solution
Some clinical trials have shown that certain probiotics can improve IBS symptoms.
-
Studies
A 2005 study published in the journal Gastroenterology showed that patients who drank a milk-based beverage with the probiotic Bifidobacterium infantis 35624 experienced dramatic reduction in abdominal pain, bloating, and bowel regularity, compared to two control groups who were given a different species of probiotic or a placebo. Considerations
When selecting a probiotic supplement, look for a reputable brand that has been clinically tested. Probiotic supplements are available at health food stores.
-
Buying a Probiotics Supplement
Look for brands that:
- Are kept in the refrigerated section.
- Identifies the specific genus, species, and strain. (For example: "Bifidobacterium infantis 35624" rather than just "Bifidobacterium").
- Lists the CFU (colony-forming unit) number in the billions, per dosage or serving.
- Includes an expiration date (probiotics are living microbes and can't survive indefinitely).
