Overview

Power wheelchairs can be used safely and efficiently if the user has a basic understanding of the operations of the unit. Disregarding safety protocol could result in serious personal injury and damage to the wheelchair.
Controls

Fully understanding the controls of the power wheelchair is paramount to safe operation. Using the brakes, seat adjustment, seat belt, power controls, steering and accessories as directed is critical to ensuring trouble-free operation.

Weather

Using a power wheelchair in rain or snow could cause serious electrical problems, unless the chair is specifically designed for all-weather use. The chair could become inoperable, leaving the user stranded.
Ground Obstacles

Traversing uneven, soft, or soggy terrain could immobilize the power wheelchair and result in serious damage to the mechanical and electrical systems.
Physical Ability

The center of gravity must be maintained at all times to avoid tipping the wheelchair. The user must understand his physical limitations and the ergonomics of the chair.
Health

Safely operating a power wheelchair is dependent upon the user's overall health, including vision, hearing and motor skills. Poor health could limit the safe operation of the wheelchair, endangering the user and those nearby.
