How to Play Goldbrau

by Contributing Writer
3Goldbrau is a game about beer! Wait, don't run away. It's not a drinking game, it's a board game. Wait, don't run away. The game takes place in a giant plaza in Germany, which is populated by 6 beer gardens. The beer gardens, in turn, are supplied by 4 breweries. And what do you do? Why, you buy stock in the beer gardens and breweries, expand fences in gardens and supply them with your beer.Goldbrau board game
2 or 3 opponents
SetupGive each player all the pieces of one color (including the three action cards) and $25. Place fences at the entrance of each beer garden surrounding the single table at the entrance.Remove all bum and waitress cards from the deck, shuffle the deck, and deal each player six cards. Each player must choose four of these cards to play immediately. Players place a stock cube on any building for which they played a card, and then those cards are removed from the game.Shuffle the bum and waitress cards back into the deck. Place the Bum token on the Eagle beer garden, and the Waitress token on the Bear. Flip over the top two cards from the deck so they are face-up.Choose a starting player, and hand her the starting player token. That player places a boss figure on any building on the board. The player to her left then places a boss figure on any building without a boss figure on it. Continue around the table two times in a four player game. (If playing with three players, go around the table a third time.)Game PlayChoose one of your three action cards and place it face-down in front of you. Once all players have chosen an action, actions are revealed simultaneously. Each player only takes the action associated with the card he played. The three actions take place in order, each in their own step.Take the fence action by expanding the fences of a beer garden where you are the boss, to encompass an additional table. (For example, if you have a boss figure on a beer garden with one table at the beginning of the game, you can expand in any of three directions to give your beer garden a second table.) If you were the only player to play a fence card, you may take this action again and gain an extra table.Take the boss action by placing one of your bosses on a building. You may only place bosses on buildings where you own at least one share of stock, and where the current boss (if there is one) does not own more than half of the stock. If you already have a boss on a beer garden and a brewery, you may instead take your boss action to begin supplying your beer garden with your brewery. (Do this by placing the brewery sign in the space above the beer garden.) If you were the only player to play a boss card, you may take the boss action again, doing either of the two options.Take the card action by buying one of the two face-up cards or a random card from the top of the deck. Price is determined by the number of players who played the card action. If you are the only player, your card costs $2. If two players chose to buy cards, each card costs $5. And if more than two players attempted to buy cards, buying a card will cost $8. When a card is bought, it is immediately removed from the game, and the player who bought it places a stock cube on the appropriate building. If the card bought was a Waitress or Bum, the player who bought it moves the appropriate token to another beer garden on the board.Score a week after seven rounds. Each beer garden receives income of $2 per table, with a $10 bonus for the waitress and a $6 penalty for the bum (totals cannot go below $0). Divide the beer garden's income equally among all stock cubes present on that beer garden, with any remainder going to the owner of the boss figure. This same income is then paid to the brewery that supplied that beer garden, split among the brewery's stock holders in the same way.End the game after three weeks. Whoever has the most money wins the game!
Stock cards may be saved in your hand and played just before a scoring round payout.Waitress and Bum cards may never be saved in your hand; they must be played immediately!Goldbrau beer board game
