How to Plan a High School Graduation

Overview
High school graduation is one of the most important events in an adolescent's life. A well-organized, carefully planned graduation creates memories that are certain to last a lifetime. There are many details, both small and large, that will need to be taken care of, and with the right people on board, the process can and should be a seamless one.

Step 1
Put together a committee of people to lay the groundwork. The school leadership team, head teachers, parent coordinator, student government, and PTA all consist of members who are willing and able to serve as the point people for an event of this nature. The committee will be responsible for laying the ground work, setting timelines, and keeping all participants abreast of updates and changes. Additionally, the committee is responsible for securing the keynote speaker and music for the ceremony.

Step 2
Get the graduates involved. Hold an initial meeting with all the seniors; be sure to keep them actively involved. Create a suggestion box so students can offer their own ideas or have them fill out surveys listing their favorite processional songs, for example. The more active the students are, the more they will care about the entire process.

Step 3
If a hall is needed for the graduation, reserve it well in advance of the graduation date. By the start of the spring semester, the space needs to be booked, and if you are working with a large number of students, consider solidifying this even earlier. Most schools within the same region will hold graduations within a similar time frame, so it is essential that this is taken care of as soon as possible. There are few things worse than having thousands of hopeful graduates and families with nowhere to go on that special day.

Step 4
Rehearse! No matter how wonderful things look on paper, you will still need to see how your students look as they walk down the aisle. The movement should be fluid and timely in relation to the song. The way students receive their diplomas should also be organized. The should walk on, shake hands, smile, pose for the camera, and walk off. These little details can and will make the difference between order and mayhem on graduation day.

Step 5
Elect one person to handle the finishing touches. Too many cooks in the kitchen will ruin the stew. The guidance counselor is a good person to elect to help the valedictorian and salutatorian prepare. This same person can also ensure that all students have received their correct caps and gowns and can tie up any remaining loose ends.
