Overview
Bipolar disorder, which is sometimes referred to as manic depression, is a long-term mental disorder characterized by unpredictable shifts in mood and behavior. Bipolar disorder can manifest itself in the form of certain physical symptoms.

Types
The different types of bipolar disorder are bipolar I, bipolar II, cyclothymic disorder, mixed bipolar and rapid cycling bipolar disorder. Each type involves some degree of alternating manic and depressive mood episodes.

Manic
Physical symptoms of a manic episode may include very fast talking, restlessness, agitation, hyperactivity, impulsive behavior, sleeping little and being easily distracted.

Depressive
Depressive episodes may be characterized by such physical symptoms as difficulty concentrating, irritability, changes in eating and sleeping habits, fatigue, and withdrawal from pleasurable social bonds and activities.

Coexisting Illness
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, substance abuse is common among those with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder has also been linked to conditions including thyroid disease, heart disease, diabetes, migraine headaches and chronic pain that does not respond to treatment.

According to MayoClinic.com, severe cases of bipolar disorder may cause psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions.
