Numerous veterinary and first-aid organizations, including the American Red Cross, offer pet first-aid training courses and reference guides to help prepare pet owners in case of an emergency. There are several basic pet first-aid topics, techniques and tips that are covered in all comprehensive pet first-aid training courses and guides, though some techniques and treatments may differ depending on the type of pet.
Recognize an Emergency

The first skill learned in pet first-aid training is how to recognize an emergency, assess the situation and decide on a course of action.

Assess Vitals

Assessing vital signs and knowing what is normal for a pet helps pet owners quickly recognize when their pet is in distress. A snout-to-tail assessment preformed when a pet is healthy creates a baseline for future emergency assessments.
Handle an Injured Pet

Injured pets can sometimes act aggressively. Knowing how to approach and comfort an injured pet can reduce his anxiety and protect pet owners from injury.
Perform CPR

When and how to perform pet CPR is a critical skill that all pet owners are advised to learn. This skill varies by the type of pet, and most training courses include hands-on skill practice.
Treat Common Problems

Common first-aid emergencies include bite wounds, stings, choking, poisoning, seizures and fractures. Pet first-aid training teaches pet owners how to assess and treat these common problems, as well as administer medication in the proper dosages, until they are able to consult with a veterinarian.
Stock a Pet First-Aid Kit

A well-stocked pet first-aid kit provides the supplies necessary to treat the most common pet injuries. Items such as gauze, hydrogen peroxide, Benadryl capsules, Pepto Bismol tablets, splints and bandages are all part of a complete pet first-aid kit.
