About Passport Renewal
If you routinely work or play over the U.S. border or simply enjoy occasional travel abroad, don't forget to renew your passport before it expires. Whether you need to renew your passport book or passport card, be sure to follow renewal instructions carefully to avoid unnecessary delays and travel interruptions.
-
Mail
Passports that were issued to an individual age 16 or over within the preceding 15 years, have supporting documentation for a name change and are not damaged may be renewed by mail. Form DS-82 will be required (see link in Resources).
-
In Person
Passports that do not qualify for renewal by mail may be renewed at a regional passport agency or a passport acceptance facility. Form DS-11 will be required (see link in Resources).
-
Living Abroad
U.S. citizens living abroad may renew passports at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
-
Attachments
Passport renewals require submission of your most recent passport, two identical photographs, proof of any name change and payment of renewal fees.
-
Processing Times
A typical passport renewal takes 4 to 6 weeks. Expedited service of 2 to 3 weeks is available for an additional fee. Emergency renewal may be obtained in person through a regional passport agency only.
-
Obstacles
An individual who owes $2,500 or more in back child support payments may be prohibited from renewing a passport.
